History of Yiwu

Yiwu became a county in 2220 BC. It was named "County of Yiwu" in 624 AD.

Many famous poets and scholars have been inspired by the natural landscape around Yiwu:

Luo Binwang, one of the "Four outstanding personalities" at the beginning of Tang dynasty;
Zong Ze, the anti-Jin general (Song dynasty);
Zhu Danxi, one of the four doctors of the Jin and Yuan dynasties.

 

More recently, there has been the educationist Chen Wangdao, the literature theorician Feng Xuefeng, and the historian Wu Han.


Yiwu has been known as the "Home of culture".
